ZERO ENERGY BUILDING DISPLAY

The BCIT Zero Energy Buildings Learning Centre has developed an interactive science exhibit on Zero Energy Buildings and will be displaying this on HEAT.

What does a zero energy ready approach mean? Essentially the construction industry must follow an envelope-first tactic to reduce total energy requirements in buildings. This is done by creating an airtight seal and high R-values in the exterior walls, making sure there are no thermal bridges, and installing high-quality windows and a mechanical ventilation system that also recovers heat. With a solid envelope, heat pump systems are then installed to keep homes and offices comfortable on those very cold or very hot days.

2023 PROGRAMME

8th September

10.30-11.00

Is Ultra-Low Energy Demand a Prerequisite for Home Electrification?
Building envelopes play a key role in diminishing the energy requirements of buildings, allowing home electrification as a strategy for attaining net-zero carbon emissions. What are the primary components of a building designed with an envelope-first approach for achieving an ultra-low energy standard and what are the effects on our electrification journey?
Melissa Hamer and Alex Hebert from the BCIT ZEB Learning Centre

13.00-13.30

Net zero housing and the role of electrification.
Join us to learn what is needed to ‘get to zero’ and how and why you might want to plan for it. Codes are going there and eventually the market will value such homes and buildings. Dan and Gary will explore cost efficiency, codes, the steps to achieving decarbonisation, how to assemble the right team and how to develop your plans.
Gary Hamer, BC Hydro
Dan Caesar, Chief Executive, Fully Charged

14.30-15.00

The benefits of induction cooking.
It’s not just about how quick you can boil water… it’s energy-efficient, climate-friendly, and better for your health. Induction cooking is the new “luxury cooking” and the way of the future. Multiple research studies are sounding the alarm on the health impacts of gas-cooking, including methane leakage while the stove is off and environmental pollutants from combustion that are impacting indoor air quality. Learn more about the benefits of cooking with electricity.
Chef Meeru Dhalwala, Co-owner Vij’s Restaurant and cookbook author
Dr. Deborah Curry, BC Subcommittee Member, CAPE

9th September

10.30-11.00

How can people that live in apartments participate in the shift to cleaner energy?
Join Scott as he explores a combination of low cost thermal storage (hot water tanks) and low amperage heat pumps (5Amp @ 208/230V) charging the hot water tanks over a long period of time to provide 100% of the domestic hot water heating for all tenants of apartment buildings.  By using the low amperage heat pump (electrical load compares to a clothes dryer) and storage we have removed the need for costly electrical upgrades.  This in particular permits us to address the retrofit market cost effectively.
Scott Graham, Founder, Renew Heat

13.00-13.30 Answers to the ten most asked insulation questions
In this session Dave will provide short, informative answers to the most common insulation questions his company gets asked by homeowners and builders around products, performance, application and cost.

David Lewis, Alpine Insulation and board member, Home Performance Stakeholder Council

14.30-15.00 Making the case for solar PV in home electrification
Leveraging solar PV technology for electricity generation can have a substantial impact on residential properties in British Columbia. This positive effect is particularly pronounced when houses are equipped with a heat pump and an EV charger. What are the optimal conditions and strategies for implementing PV systems at home?
Ben Giudici, BCIT ZEB Learning Centre instructor and owner at Riverside Energy Systems
